TTT Project – Augmented Reality Experience to promote local food from Alt Penedès
26 de September de 2022
In this post we explain the immersive experience that we have developed for the Alt Penedès Regional Council in its Project “Work, Talent and Technology” to promote local food from producers in the Alt Penedès region.

Immersive Experience
The immersive experience that we have developed for the Alt Penedès Regional Council consist of a QR codes that will be placed on the menus of the Alt Penedès restaurants so that customers can see in an immersive way typical products and foods from the region, and which are also proximity products. While diners decide the menu, with the QR code, through their mobile or tablet, they can access this experience, in which they can see the products that we describe below, with their collection, production, installation, statements etc.
In September we started with some of the recordings, which finished in mid-October due to the collection and some products production periods.

Among the local products of the Alt Penedès region, the Regional Council has selected the following as the most important:
Rooster of Penedès
The PGI Rooster of Penedès has the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) mention granted by the European Community to quality agricultural and food products attributed to a specific geographical area. This PGI mention was granted to the Breeders Association of the Penedesenca Chicken Breed since 2016.
The PGI Rooster of Penedès product is fresh chicken meat (males and females) of the improved black Penedesenca variety of the traditional Penedesenca breed. This meat is characterized by its taste quality, the reddish color of the carcasses, and firm and juicy meat and thighs. It is a bird of slow growth, very rustic, with good vitality, of a Mediterranean body type, light and heavy meat production, resistant to Mediterranean heat and cold. The «Rooster of Penedès» is raised in chicken coops that have access to the outside throughout the year and is characterized by including grape seed in its diet. The breeding of the “Rooster of Penedès” chicken is carried out in the geographical area that includes municipalities of the Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès, Garraf region, and some Anoia’s municipalities.

Oil
In the Alt Penedès there are many producers of extra virgin olive oil, many of them with DO (Designation of Origin) and PDO (Protected Designation Origin). All these producers are highly dedicated, especially in the oil production process, from the careful harvest of the olives to the strict control of the first cold pressing in their mills. There are different varieties of oil, with which they produce excellent virgin oils, each with its own characteristics in terms of flavor and aroma. The oils from Alt Penedès have exceptional characteristics, both from the health point of view and gastronomy. The most widespread olive variety in the region is the Arbequina, although there are also other varieties such as the Menya or the Arboçana.

Honey
Honey is the oldest sweet food consumed by humans. It is produced by bees from the nectar of flowers and consuming a tablespoon a day, it provides us with different nutritional properties and health benefits. Honey has antibacterial properties, it is useful to calm coughs, sore throats and other respiratory problems. It also has antioxidant properties, helps heal stomach ulcers or gastroenteritis and, when applied to the skin, helps heal wounds.
In the Alt Penedès there are several honey producers, and the variety they produce depends on the flowers from which the bee has extracted the nectar. In the Alt Penedès area, rosemary honey predominates, but other varieties are also grown, such as orange honey, or the thousand-flower variety.

Ordal Peach
The Ordal peach is a variety of peach found between the municipalities of Subirats (Alt Penedès) and Avinyonet del Penedès, and is one of the highest quality products in the area. It is a 100% rainfed crop in clayey and very calcareous soil, characteristics that make the resulting fruit have qualities that are difficult to find in other regions where peach cultivation is also widespread. It is a high-quality peach with an intense flavor and aroma and, depending on the variety, its flesh can be meatier or juicier in texture. The best known variety is the vineyard peach, intense yellow in color, fleshy and sweet but with a slight acid touch that makes it very pleasant on the palate. The Ordal peach is unique and practically in the entire country there is no region where the peach is grown and has the great qualities that 100% dry land gives it.

Pontons Apple
In the municipal term of Pontons (Alt Penedès) a variety of apple is cultivated which in this area is called Roqueta, but which beyond these places in Penedès is known simply as “Pontons apple”. La Roqueta is an autochthonous variety that is characterized by being small, crunchy, with a slightly acidic taste and green in color with some red spots. It is a variant of the pippin apple; small, with little presence, but placed on the plate it is incomparable, sweet and aromatic like no other. The traditional geographical area for growing Pontons apples is the pre-coastal mountain range around the municipality of Pontons and in areas of the municipalities of Querol, Mediona, Torrelles de Foix, San Martín Sarroca, Font-rubí, La Laguna, Sant Quintí de Mediona… It is an apple highly prized by restaurateurs for its culinary qualities and has the added value of being a km 0 product.

Mute duck from Penedès
The Penedès mute duck is a duck raised in the rural areas around the city of Vilafranca del Penedès, it is raised both in the Alt and Baix Penedès. The mute duck has high-quality meat, less fat (with less cholesterol) and very fine skin. The meat of the mute duck is also more consistent and darker than that of other ducks, which is why it stands as one of the most appreciated products of the region by restaurateurs. The breeding of this species of duck takes place essentially in the corral, but preferably these birds should be raised with an attached park or in an open space. The mute duck must eat a minimum of 70% cereals or derivatives so that the meat is consistent. The mute duck from Penedès raised under regulated conditions has enjoyed the Regional Designation of Quality Product since 1994.

In this QR the 6 products appear and we can access each one of them.
We are very happy to be able to participate in this initiative of the Alt Penedès Regional Council and to be able to show applications of immersive technologies in various sectors such as restaurants, as well as many others in which we work such as social, education and health.
