This project is a project carried out by the Olesa de Montserrat City Council to help raise awareness among the population of Olesa de Montserrat about the importance of proper recycling.

This project builds on a previous project on selective waste collection that we carried out for the Garraf Penedès Community of Madrid. In this project, we developed an experience as a practical learning complement to an exhibition aimed at students from 3rd grade of Primary Education (8-9 years old) to Vocational Training courses, the general adult population (including seniors), adult education centers, integration spaces for newcomers, etc. This immersive experience allowed students to learn which waste should be deposited in each selective waste collection container and to understand the environmental and economic benefits achieved through proper waste separation.

For this project, we developed personified bins with actors to represent recycling in a comical way. One of the project videos we prepared was seen by the Environment Department of the Olesa City Council, and they liked the comical representation. In this case, instead of creating an immersive experience, they asked us to do street performances to attract and interest citizens in the characteristics of recycling. We carried out a total of three performances, the first two focused on raising awareness about proper recycling and its benefits, and the last focused more on the new electronic bins that will begin to be used during the summer of 2025.

First performance

In this video you can see a summary of the first performance that took place on the street.

Second Performance

The second performance was done inside the market, where we had more interaction with the stallholders and the people who came to buy.

Third performance

The third performance also took place on the street, very close to Plaza del Oli, a busy area. This performance focused on the new containers being installed by the Olesa de Montserrat City Council.

These containers will be locked and opened by user identification, using a card, a key fob, and/or a mobile app. By bringing the device close to it, the container will indicate that it is open and ready for use via an acoustic and/or light signal. Once the donation is made, the container closes automatically. User identification is obtained with a number associated with the card, and the company in charge of the containers will not have any personal information.

The objective of these containers is to implement a fair waste rate, a charging system that seeks to require each household to pay based on the amount and type of waste they generate, rather than a fixed rate that is the same for all. The basic principles are that the polluter pays; the more waste you generate (refuse), the more you pay; and a bonus for good behavior: if you recycle well and generate less refuse, you pay less. There will be transparency and fairness, as the system must be understandable and perceived as fair. The expected results are a reduction in waste, improved separation and recycling, and greater social and environmental equity.

Here you can see some publications from the Olesa City Council regarding the performances, as well as their appearances in the media.

We are very pleased with the results of these performances, as recycling is a current issue affecting all municipalities in Catalonia. Raising awareness about proper recycling through humor is a friendly way to reach out to citizens in a friendly manner, helping them understand the importance of recycling both in terms of sustainability and economics, emphasizing the need to recycle for better coexistence with the environment.
