On June 23, the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) published the article “Goodbye to Zoom and Meet? The metaverse sneaks into work meetings.” This article talked about how the metaverse can take advantage of the best of the physical and digital world.
At the end of last year (2021), Bill Gates announced on his personal blog that in the next two or three years, most virtual meetings will take place in the metaverse, a 3D space with digital avatars. Luis explains that the metaverse is a technological tool that allows meetings to be held more closely to reality. If we have Virtual Reality glasses, we can create our own avatar, personalize it and see the rest of the people in the form of an avatar in the same space, be it an office, an outdoor place or the chosen environment. Our avatar will respond to the movements we make and, when we speak, it will move its lips. “You don’t stop seeing avatars, but it’s a pretty realistic experience. One of its advantages is that you can move around this virtual space, change positions, place people from a perspective that everyone sees you if you have to do a presentation or sit at a round table if you must participate in a debate”.
The metaverse makes it easier for all the dynamics that are generated in a Virtual Reality meetings to come closer to what a physical meeting is. But meetings in the metaverse are a supplement, not a substitute, as they also have their limitations.
