TPM Journey is a training in Virtual Reality (VR) developed for the Donation and Transplantation Institute (DTI) as part of different training actions as the International Workshop in Transplant Procurement Management. This immersive training purpose experience is to publicize the Spanish donation and transplantation model, an international benchmark model.

It is an experience developed in co-creation with experts in donation and transplantation from the DTI Institute, using a User Centered Design methodology.

The user will experience a guided visit to a third level Spanish Hospital focusing on how the Transplant Coordination Office works internally, and how it coordinates with the rest of the hospital units to make donations and transplants successfully. The experience combines conversationstheoretical explanations by Hospital Unit Heads, and possible organ and tissue donors practical cases that the user explores interactively.

USER JOURNEY

  1. Alicia, TPM Unit Head (Transplant Procurement Management) welcome the user outside the hospital.
  2. Transplant Coordination Office. Alicia presents the TPM team. The user will be able to know first-hand TPM profiles and will learn the unit internal workings.
  3. Emergency Unit and Intensive Care Unit. The user will know in depth how these units are crucial for the donation and transplantation processes to be carried out on time and properly. They will be received by the Chief Medical Officer and the Supervising Nurse of each units. Furthermore, the user will encounter an unexpected situation and will see the medical team in full intervention.
  4. DCD Box. Some hospitals of the Spanish model have a special box for DCD-type donor cases; the user together with Alicia and the UCI team will visit this unique and highly equipped space to learn how it works.
  5. Immunology Laboratory. They will be received by Sonia, the hospital immunology head, in charge of organs matching and allocation processes. The user will learn what the criteria are to perform these tasks and how immunology coordinates with the TPM Office when there is a case.
  6. It is the moment for the user to meet the different donation programs medical managers (pancreas, heart, lung, kidney and liver) in a plenary session in which they can learn about the program aspects that interest them the most.
  7. Medical management. You will meet the hospital medical director, in charge of explaining the economic and legal model aspects.
  8. The Tissue Donor Center (TDC) is the tissue donation center. Each region has one, and the user will visit the one in the region that is also in the hospital where he is visiting.

USER INTERACTION AND EVALUATION

This experience assesses not only the knowledge acquired by the user / student, but also their involvement and their ambition for knowledge, specifically if the student is willing to invest more time to deep in some topics. This is achieved by putting the user in situations where they can choose whether to proceed to the next scene or stay there to ask visiting medical personnel deeper questions.

SHOOTING DAY

For the filming day we formed a powerful multidisciplinary team: two directors for parallel filming, two cameras, executive producers and production assistants, more than twenty-five actors and actresses, technical specialists in medical equipment and medical simulation engineers, and experts in donation and transplant.

We chose the CISARCSimulation Center of the University of Manresa, as the ideal setting to film this experience. CISARC has 8 simulation units (from hospital rooms to ICU rooms, through surgical blocks, etc.) with which a total of 50 different scenarios can be created.

A great job was done by the whole team, with great efforts in details taking care and ensure the final product quality. We greatly appreciate and acknowledge the involvement and energy that everyone put into the project. Everyone was very focused on everything going well. The professionalism and optimism atmosphere transcends the screen.

VIRTUAL REALITY IS NOT ONLY THE FUTURE BUT THE MEDICINE PRESENT

TPM Journey is just one of the many immersive technologies applications in the health world and in health professionals trainings. We are facing a technology that is revolutionizing the medical field because:

  1. It enables doctors and nurses to be trained by reducing the failures consequences in real life to zero. This is vital in formative periods, in which students need to make mistakes to continue learning, but obviously cannot afford a mistake when it comes from a patient real life or the family emotional state.
  2. It allows the teacher to monitor their students actions and decisions in real time, thus becoming the best guide in their learning process.
  3. A decision (interactions) tracking is also generated, and in this way the student learns from their own successes and mistakes.

We speak more deeply about the advantages of Virtual Reality applied to health training in Health with Science, the UOC’s Blog for Health Sciences Studies.
